30 from 30 (Thirty things I’ve learnt from turning thirty)

On my final day of being 30, I thought it would be a fun idea to reflect on some of the things I’ve learnt thus far or the things that have really been reaffirmed in this past year.

  1. Age is just a freaking number!
  2. Being in your thirties is nothing to freak out about. Heck, it can even be enjoyable.
  3. You still won’t feel like a proper grown-up.
  4. Health really is wealth. How many times have I said that?! But this year gave me another huge reminder.
  5. Not “having it all” or “having it all figured out” yet is perfectly normal. It’s probably an illusion, anyway.
  6. Besides, that’s not the key to real happiness anyway.
  7. If your body clock isn’t screaming at you that you should have kids asap, that’s more than okay.
  8. If society is screaming at you that you should be having kids, politely tell them to do one.
  9. There’s still so much to learn about the world.
  10. And still lots more to learn about yourself.
  11. Dreams and goals don’t stop at a certain age limit.
  12. Your bullshit filter really kicks in.
  13. When it comes to friendships, quality is far more important than quantity.
  14. When the chips are down you learn who really has your back.
  15. People will constantly surprise you. Sometimes in good ways. Others in not so good ways.
  16. Be kind to one another, the world needs more kindness.
  17. There is no place as lonely as when your own mind turns against you.
  18. Be gentle with yourself you’re doing the best you can.
  19. Those foods that you thought you’d suddenly start liking when you are grown up you still can’t stand. Although, stir-fried broccoli is weirdly delicious.
  20. Teenage skin is not just for teenagers.
  21. Hormones are responsible for so much!
  22. I still can’t contour properly.
  23. I’ve still not used algebra.
  24. Time goes by so quickly.
  25. And because of that, you need to be vigilant about making time for the people and things that are important to you.
  26. Expect the unexpected.
  27. Something as small as the size of a pinhead can change your life dramatically. Damn you ticks! Damn you Lyme disease. If you’re spending time outdoors be vigilant about checking yourself for ticks or preventing being bitten as much as possible.
  28. You can only ever be yourself, learn to love that person.
  29. Each day is a new beginning.
  30. Don’t measure your life in years, measure it in love. (Thanks, Rent)
